The public sector should be making better use of specialist contractors, temporary workers and agency staff rather than considering mass redundancies to save money, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation has argued. Launching its “Make it Work!” campaign this week, the REC wants to emphasise the benefits of outsourcing work to independent contractors and recruitment companies, rather than relying on the conventional civil service model. Whoever is in power after the coming general election is expected to make swingeing cuts to the public sector workforce generating widespread concern about standards in public services. The REC is pointing to the success of the use of supply teachers in state schools and locum doctors in the NHS as a model for the rest of the public sector.
